The Problem

Users struggle to stay engaged with financial habits because traditional tools feel static, disconnected, and lack meaningful feedback over time.

The Solution

Designed a gamified, world-based interface that transforms financial behavior into an interactive, evolving environment that reinforces progress.

Prototype

Visualizing Financial Behavior

HABITS SHAPE THE ENVIRONMENT

User actions directly influence the world, with consistent behaviors expanding and evolving the environment to reflect progress over time.

FEEDBACK IS SEEN, NOT JUST TRACKED

Financial activity is reflected through visual changes, making progress and patterns immediately understandable.

SYSTEMS ENCOURAGE CONSISTENCY

The experience reinforces positive behavior through clear cause and effect, helping users build momentum and sustain habits.

Reflections

Small Actions, Growing Worlds

Designing Terra pushed me to think beyond static interfaces and toward systems that respond to behavior over time. I learned how translating abstract data into a visual environment can make complex patterns more intuitive and engaging. Moving forward, I would explore how real financial data and long-term user testing could further refine the system and strengthen its impact.

Research Takeaways

User Engagement Patterns in E-Commerce Journeys

Engagement Dictates Information Density

Users with lower intent (browsing) respond best to visually-driven cards with minimal text, while high-intent users (decisive) require detailed specs, reassurance, and prominent CTAs.

Interaction Complexity Should Scale with Intent

As users move from browsing to purchasing, interaction depth should increase with features like subtle hovers, filters, comparison tools, and checkout actions.

clear layouts help everyone

For mid-level engagement, consistent layouts and visible differentiators (like ratings or key features) aid in decision-making, while high engagement benefits from reduced friction and clear next steps.
